Renters’ Options In Small Storage Sheds

Small storage sheds are the perfect companions to small houses with small yards. If you are a renter, you have a couple of options. If you want to build a small storage shed on a foundation, naturally, you will have to clear the construction with your landlord; however, this is not your only option. There are also freestanding small storage sheds that you can disassemble and carry away with you when you move.

Portable small storage sheds offer many advantages to renters. First, you will not lose your investment in your storage shed if you can take it with you when you go. Second, you will not run the risk of your landlord raising your rent due to improvements to the property that you have bought and paid for! This may sound outrageous but it happens quite often!

Before you go shopping for small storage sheds, decide where you will put the shed and how big you want it to be. Generally speaking, a small portable storage shed will be no bigger than 8’x10’. If you have a pre-existing concrete slab, such as a patio, that would be a good location for your small portable storage shed. Measure the area where you want the shed to stand and look online and at local home improvement centres to see what is available in that size.

You can purchase pre-constructed small storage sheds in wood; however, this is a rather costly option and when you move, you will need to trailer your storage shed away. This can add to the expense. For these reasons, a wooden storage shed is probably a better choice for a homeowner than a renter.

Metal sheds can be assembled and disassembled fairly easily. You will need to save the instructions and keep up with all the little bits and pieces so that you can reassemble your small metal storage shed if you move. You can temporarily anchor your small metal storage shed to an existing concrete slab; however, you will have to be sure to fill in the drill holes carefully when you remove the shed so that your landlord won’t charge you for damage.

Plastic small storage sheds are a super-easy choice. They are inexpensive, lightweight and you can usually transport all the components in the trunk of your car. Once you get your small plastic shed home, you can snap it together, literally, in a matter of minutes. One big advantage to a small plastic storage shed in a rental situation is that it is obviously a piece of your property. Your landlord cannot lay claim to it or say it is an improvement to the property and, therefore, charge you more rent!

One disadvantage of a small plastic storage shed is that you can’t really anchor it, so if you live in an area with high winds, you may have problems. However, positioning can make a big difference. If you put your small plastic storage shed in a sheltered area right next to your house, it will be unlikely to blow away. You can also place a heavy object, such as a paving stone on the floor inside each corner to give it a little more stability.

No matter what choice you make in small storage sheds, the additional space and convenience your choice provides will surely enhance your life.
